At an impressive passing out parade, 101 Officer cadets passed out of the First Training Squadron at Naval Base, Kochi today. The Parade was reviewed by Rear Admiral Sudarshan Shrikhande, Chief of Staff of Southern Naval Command. The 24 week afloat training on board the First Training Squadron ships comprising of INS Tir, INS Shardul, Indian Coast Guard Ship Varuna and Sail Training Ships- INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini- is intended to provide them a firsthand experience of the rigours of life onboard a warship at sea and developing their Sea legs. During the period, the cadets are trained on General and Astro Navigation, Communications, Gunnery and Missile Warfare, and seamanship in addition to military values. They also visited the Ports of Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Safaga (Egypt), Djibouti, and Salalah (Oman) as part of their international exposure to countries and cultures.
Rear Admiral Sudarshan Shrikhande presented the awards to award winners. Cadet Veeravalli David won the Chief of Naval Staff Trophy and “Telescope” for the Best All Round Cadet. Cadet Mohit Dua received the Binocular for standing first in overall order of merit. Cadet Simranjeet Singh received Director General Indian Coast Guard Trophy for the Best Coast Guard Cadet. In a stirring speech to the cadets and assembled gathering of Parents and Naval Officers, the Rear Admiral Shrikhande reminded them of the underlying foundation of honour that must govern an Officers conduct till his last breath.
The Admiral also said that he saw in their earnest faces the promise and determination that they would fight the Country’s enemies and defend the Constitution. While underscoring the attributes of camaraderie and loyalty, Rear Admiral Shrikhande said that term shipmates encapsulated all that and asked them to be always proud of the men they command and be one with them. Turning towards the parents of the passing out cadets, the Admiral thanked them on behalf of the Navy for giving their sons to the Navy and assured them that the Navy would look after their sons as their sons involve themselves in the noble calling of looking after the nation’s defenses. Captain Ajay Sirohi, who commanded First Training Squadron, was the conducting Officer.
