Hat-trick in a week! Agni-II successfully launched

Agni II, the pride of India's strategic arsenal was once again launched successfully on September 30 (today), at 9:30 am from the Wheeler Island off the coast of Orissa. The launch was a hat-trick after successful launches of Shourya, Prithvi-II on September 24 and September 26 respectively. The successful launch once again proved reliability of the medium range surface to surface missile.
The 2000-km range surface to surface missile, already inducted and part of countries arsenal for strategic deterrence, was launched as a training exercise by the armed forces. The two stage missile equipped with advanced high accuracy navigation system, guided by a novel scheme of state of the earth command & control system was propelled by solid rocket propellant system. The missile reached an apogee (peak altitude) of 220 km and hit the target. All the radar, telemetry systems, ectopic system tracked & monitored all parameters throughout the trajectory. Two ships located near the target point have tracked the missile in the final stage.
Dr V.K. Saraswat, SA to RM, Secretary Defence R&D & Director General DRDO, Dr. Avinash Chander, Programme Director, Distinguished Scientist & Chief Controller R&D (MSS) and Air Marshal K.J. Mathews, AVSM, YSM, congratulated all the scientists, other DRDO personnel and members of armed forces. Shri D. Lakshminarayana, PD and his team monitored all the launch operation. The event was witnessed by Shri S.K. Ray, Distingiushed Scientist &Director. RCI, Shri P. Venugopalan, OS & Director, DRDL, Dr. V.G. Sekaran, OS & Director ASL, Shri S.P. The Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army is all set to launch Agni-II – an intermediate range ballistic missile -- from Wheeler Island on August 29 (Monday). Sources tell Tarmak007 that the last-minute preparations for the user-trial are currently underway, for a possible Monday launch. “We (DRDO) are providing all logistic support to the SFC for the Agni-II launch. We are through with the range integration work today,” sources said.
The missile was last successfully test-fired (for full range) by the SFC on May 17, 2010. The pencil-like long range nuclear-capable missile can hit targets over 2000 kms. It is equipped with a state-of-the-art navigation system capable of taking the missile towards designated target very accurately.

India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has adapted a new philosophy for its missile programs, with the objective of combating time and cost overruns. The “Model Change” is expected to reduce cycle time from 15 years to around 6-7 years.
Avinash Chander, the director of DRDO’s Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), told Aviation Week in Hyderabad that the new emphasis is the result of a collective reassessment conducted by top missile scientists and engineers.
“Today the industrial base associated with India’s missile programs have grown and they are showing immense confidence to support more complex technologies,” Chander said. “We also felt the need to move away from the conventional sequential development plan to a concurrent mode.”
The shift is expected to have a positive effect on India’s Agni-5 and Agni-II Plus missile programs. With 80% of India’s Agni missile program currently supported by various industries, DRDO now hopes to leverage increased risk-taking and risk-sharing.
