Nirbhay missile cruises at 5-m altitude for nearly 10 min

Bengaluru: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) continued with its successful run of missions this year, when it conducted a ‘text-book precision’ launch of home-grown subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay, today. DRDO confirmed that the missile was launched from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha at 11:39 am.  This was the sixth launch of Nirbhay (NGL-06) and was aimed at testing the reliability of ‘boost phase’ and ‘cruise phase’ using way point navigation at very low altitudes.
The Bengaluru-bred missile took off vertically, then turned horizontally into the desired direction separating its booster, following which the wings were deployed enabling it an engine start and cruise towards its intended way points. “It was an excellent launch. This is the first time ever an indigenously-developed missile cruised at 5-metere altitude,” an official confirmed to Onmanorama. During today’s mission, the missile covered way points as low as 5 meter to maximum of 2.5 kilometres.

Delay in wing deployment caused Nirbhay missile’s third failure

Bengaluru, Jan 15: The recent failed mission of subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay is pointing towards a slight ‘pause’ (delay) during the process of wing deployment. This malfunctioning of the mechanism that deploys the wing appears to have resulted in the missile developing a very high roll-rate, which led to the Inertial Navigation System (INS) losing its frame of reference. This caused the missile to veer away from its intended flight path, leading to a situation which called for aborting the mission from safety considerations.
Sources within the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), who reviewed the video footage of the missile’s failed flight, confirmed to Mathrubhumi that the wing is normally deployed in less than 500 milli-seconds (0.5 sec.) after booster burn-out and separation of the booster section from the main missile.
“In the previous missions, we have been achieving the wing deployment in around 300-350 milli-seconds. This time the wing seems to have got stuck at 60 degrees position for about 1.5 seconds causing the damage. This is what we have assessed so far. The missile appears to have developed the high roll rate due to the partially deployed wing”, an official said.

India on Friday successfully test-fired home-grown subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur. Nirbhay, with a strike range of 800-1000, km took off from the Launch Complex-3 of ITR today at 10.04 am. As per the script, it crossed all the 10 way points before hitting the designated target area. Stay tuned for more updates.

Nirbhay, India's first home-grown subsonic cruise missile, is all set for its launch from Interim Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur (Near Balasore in Orissa) on Friday, Oct 17. This is Nirbhay's second launch, the first being terminated mid-way on 12 March 2013 owing to a technical snag. Nirbhay, with an expected strike range of 800-1000 km, is the first missile being made completely in Bangalore. The missile was nurtured at the Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) premier laboratory Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) in Bangalore's C V Raman Nagar, an area infested with defence units. TARMAK007 EXCLUSIVE | NIRBHAY LAUNCH VIDEO



Here's an exclusive video footage of last year's maiden launch of Nirbhay, India’s first subsonic cruise missile, which had to be terminated after 20-minutes into its mission. Nirbhay had travelled almost 250 km towards the target after the launch, but a technical snag dented its designated flight path. Capabilities like the lift-off from the canister, the booster separation, ignition of cruise vehicle engine at high altitude, wing deployment, control guidance and way-point navigation were proven during the launch. 
The video is of 2:37 minutes and till 1 minute the launch frames have been captured by various ground-based cameras. The remaining part has been shot from a Sukhoi (Su-30 MKI), which flew parallel to the missile.
As DRDO scientists gear up for the next launch (on October 17, 2014) of Nirbhay -- India's first 'Made-in-Bangalore Missile' -- this video sourced after 'lots of effort' should inspire many, considering some of the first-time technologies our scientists could prove. This footage was first shown to a select audience during DefExpo in Delhi this year.

Breaking on Tarmak007! Nirbhay countdown begins

The countdown for Nirbhay, India's first subsonic cruise missile, has begun in Balasore. The missile will take-off from Launch Complex-III at 11.30 am, sources confirm to Tarmak007.
"The missile will have to travel for an hour to reach its designated target in Bay of Bengal," a top source tells Tarmak007.
This is also Bangalore's first missile, nurtured at ADE labs in C V Raman Nagar. Nirbhay's range claimed by DRDO is up to 1000 km.
