Propelled by HAL youngsters, HTT-40 ready to impress Parrikar

Bengaluru, June 16: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) will roll out their Basic Trainer Aircraft (BTA) – the Hindustan Turbo Trainer (HTT-40) – for an ‘official flight’ at Old Airport in Bengaluru tomorrow.
Witnessing the event will be Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, whose backing has infused fresh life into this HAL-funded project, which had earlier flown into turbulent weather, with a not-so-happy-customer in Indian Air Force (IAF).
As first reported by Mathrubhumi, the BTA had its maiden flight last month (May 31) with HAL’s Chief Test Pilot Group Capt Subramaniam (Retd) undertaking a ‘normal circuit flying mission’ for around 30 minutes. Co-piloting the maiden mission was Group Capt Venugopal (Retd), a Test Pilot with HAL.
In the last two weeks, the HTT-40 had seven flights, logging over three-plus hours totally.

Tejas not singled out during post-Iron Fist briefing: IAF

Bengaluru, March 23: The Indian Air Force (IAF) clarified that it never portrayed India’s home-grown fighter jet Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas in ‘poor light’ after a section of media reported on a probe into ‘failed bombing missions’ during Iron Fist exercise held in Pokhran ranges recently.
The IAF also clarified that its post-Iron Fist briefing did not single out Tejas, instead presented an overall review of the Fire Power Demonstration (FPD) held on March 18.
The negative publicity for Tejas, which is on course towards fulfilling the Final Operational Clearance (FOC), is said to have caught the attention of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday, who was chairing a top-level review meeting on the fighter programme in Delhi.
* Missed target figures in Tejas review meeting
* 106 bombs hit targets, only 2 malfunctioned
* Only Jaguar LGB had a clean strike
* Everything can’t be spectacular; it’s not a movie
* Lack of awareness on fighter’s abilities

Parrikar played editor for MoD’s e-book

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar exhibited his editorial skills to perfection while putting together an e-book capturing the tasks, mandate and achievements of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently.
The e-book titled ‘In Defence of the Nation’ was released on March 5, fulfilling the requirement of Narendra Modi government, which had asked every ministry to bring out their achievements.
Sources tell OneIndia that though MoD missed the deadline to submit the e-book, and was the last to do so, its crisp content, presentation and packaging caught the attention of many ministers in the Cabinet.
With Parrikar’s eye for detail playing the propelling factor, MoD’s e-book is said to have overtaken other ministries by a fair margin.
A total of 43 e-books have been brought out by various ministers under PM Modi’s command.
Sources in the MoD confirm to OneIndia that Parrikar wasn’t impressed with the first draft being shown to him.

Parrikar clears 2 more Prying Planes for IAF ahead of Japan visit

By Anantha Krishnan M

Bengaluru, March 28: India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar cleared a proposal to build two ‘prying planes’ making use of the expertise of Bengaluru-based Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS), a premier lab under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Ahead of his maiden foreign visit to Japan, Parrikar cleared the proposal to build two Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) in India and sanctioned Rs 5,113 crore for the same. These two platforms are to be built on an Airbus A-330 for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The decision was taken at the high-power Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting on Saturday. The government plans to build a total of six AWACS in India in phases.
Currently the CABS is undertaking flight-testing and integration work of an Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) System, on an Embraer (EMB-145I). Two such systems have already undergoing critical tests in various air bases in India. The first system is expected to be handed over to the IAF within the next three months.
As reported by OneIndia during Aero India 2015, the second AEW&C System is expected to be handed over to the IAF in September this year for user evaluation trials. DRSDO had announced that the third aircraft will be arriving in India by July 2015.

OneIndia Exclusive | My job is to clear all hurdles for forces: Manohar Parrikar

By Anantha Krishnan M

Thirteen hours of non-stop meetings, facility visits, speeches in between, listening to attention-seeking officials, visitors and photo sessions hardly seemed to have frazzled India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
Parked a few metres from his make-shift office was a Service aircraft ready to transport him and the battery of officials to the next destination. “The take-off is at 8 pm,” reminded one of his aides.
Parrikar adjusts his reading glasses and says matter-of-factly. “You go ahead with your questions, I am listening.”
He takes a look at the watch. “It’s 7.40 (pm). Okay, go-ahead,” he says, nodding his head. It was time for a really supersonic interview before the scheduled take-off at 8 pm. Excerpts from the interview granted to OneIndia.
* IAF keen on Tejas squadron at the earliest
* My job is to clear all the hurdles
* Forces need to be motivated
* ‘I don’t need any publicity’

Parrikar gets tech taste; IAF gets first Tejas

By Anantha Krishnan M

Bengaluru, Jan 17: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar got a taste of the technologies being trumpeted by DRDO, HAL, BEML and BEL during a 13-hour supersonic visit to Bengaluru on Saturday. As reported by OneIndia earlier, Parrikar also handed over documents of the first Tejas series production (SP-1) aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha.
HAL must think out-of-the-box:  While patting HAL for giving thrust to the Tejas project in the last couple of years, Parrikar reminded the DPSU to be smart in their thinking process.
“I want HAL to think out-of-the-box so as to meet the time-line challenges. HAL must also apply the right management tools,” the minister said.
Parrikar wanted HAL to give thrust in the areas of research and technology by exploiting the existing knowledge base. “One does not achieve everything over-night. But by modifying our work culture and by adopting better technology and tools we can achieve the results better,” he said.
* Reluctant IAF finally toes the line
* Tyagi’s dream finally takes wing
* Parrikar rings the BEL
